If you have followed any of my blogs for any length of time, you’ll know I’m extremely passionate about becoming the best copywriter on the planet. Whenever I have any amount of spare time I’m devouring anything and everything like a crazed beast that I can find on the topic of copywriting.

You might be thinking for such a busy entrepreneur with multiple businesses, and book projects going on continually, how do I find the time to read?

Well, the secret is I love it. Just think about something you love right now. Are you thinking? Good.

So when do I find the time to read about copywriting?

For me, I find any opportunity to learn about my craft. I never get in my car unless I have a copywriting audio file to listen to. When I’m on the stepping machine in the gym I’ll read a book on copywriting, or listen to an audio file on my phone. Sometimes I do both at the same time, and I’ll explain why in a future post.

How The Sauna Helped Me Become A Master Copywriter

After my workout, I jump in the sauna for 10 or 15 minutes. And with my copywriting book of course. Even as my glasses steam up.

You might be thinking this is going over the top. But as I hit the gym 5 times a week, just reading in the sauna is an extra 50 to 75 minutes, I might otherwise have wasted.

Over a year those little 10-minute spells equals a whopping 40 to 65 hours of extra knowledge!!

That’s PASSION and DEVOTION to my craft my friend.

And if you truly want success in your craft, you have to be a monster!

How much do you love your craft?

You love it more than your mother, right? Oops, sorry mum. I didn’t mean that, but you know what I mean.

Same for me. Copywriting is not a job in my mind. It is my passion. I love crafting sales letters for my products and for my clients. It is an extremely satisfying challenge to know that I have the opportunity to increase the sales of my products or my clients with a single successful sales letter.

As the great Gary Halbert once said “you are only one sales letter away from a million dollars”.

How Can I Become A Master Copywriter Today?

I’m glad you asked. You beat me to the punch.

Becoming a master copywriter is a journey that requires dedication, practice, and continuous learning. If you’re looking to hone your copywriting skills and become a true master of the craft, here are some steps you can take:

Invest in Your Education

Consider enrolling in a copywriting course or program that teaches the fundamentals and advanced techniques of copywriting. Look for reputable courses offered by experienced copywriters or renowned institutions to ensure you receive high-quality training.

Study the Masters

Learn from the best copywriters in the industry by studying their work. Read sales letters, advertisements, and landing pages created by successful copywriters. Analyze their writing style, structure, and persuasive techniques. This will help you understand what makes their copy effective and how to apply those principles to your own writing.

Practice Your Copywriting Regularly – ‘Kick The Ball’

As I tell my writing students, “You can’t expect to become a world-class footballer by watching games on TV”. You “Must Kick The Ball”.

Likewise, copywriting is a skill that improves with practice. Set aside dedicated time to write every day. Take on various copywriting projects, such as writing headlines, sales emails, or landing page copy. The more you write, the more you’ll develop your voice and refine your skills.

Pro Tip: Set an alarm on your phone for a dedicated time of the day. Every day. When you will write copy, even for an imaginary product if you have to. Or better still. Write something that one of the clients you’d love to work with could use.

Join Copywriting Communities

Engage with other copywriters by joining online communities, such as the RMBC Group and forums dedicated to copywriting. Participate in discussions, ask questions, and share your work for feedback. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals will provide support, motivation, and valuable insights.

Embrace Feedback

Be open to receiving constructive criticism and feedback on your writing. Join writing groups or seek out mentors who can review your work and offer suggestions for improvement. Feedback helps you identify blind spots and refine your copywriting skills.

Read Copywriting Widely

Expand your knowledge and understanding of various subjects by reading books, articles, and blogs. A well-rounded copywriter is knowledgeable about different industries and can adapt their writing style to different niches. Reading also enhances your vocabulary and helps you develop a versatile writing voice.

Test Your Copywriting and Analyze Your Copywriting

As a copywriter, it’s important to test different approaches and analyze the results. Experiment with different headlines, calls to action, or copy structures to see what resonates best with your audience. Use data and analytics to measure the effectiveness of your copy and make informed decisions.

Stay Updated

The world of copywriting is constantly evolving, with new trends and techniques emerging. Stay updated with the latest industry news, attend webinars or conferences, and follow influential copywriters on social media. Continuous learning ensures you stay at the forefront of copywriting practices.

Becoming a master copywriter takes time and effort, but with consistent practice, a thirst for knowledge, and a commitment to excellence, you can elevate your skills and achieve mastery in the art of persuasive writing.

Of course, you will not become a master copywriter by reading about it without practicing your craft.

David Beckham never became a master footballer by reading about how to bend a ball around a wall.

He practiced his craft, over and over again. He stayed behind after training. Often alone. And kicked hundreds, and hundreds of balls around a dummy wall.

And you have to do the same.

So, today I want to help you “bend a ball around a wall”. Following, I’m going to give you a few ideas on how to start on your path to become a master copywriter.

First, go and get today’s mail. This is the so-called ‘junk-mail’ (you do keep your junk-mail, don’t you? And if you don’t, you start today. There are gems in dem dere junk-mail)

List Headlines

The first kind of headline I want you to practice with is called: List headlines

But I don’t have a company yet!

If you don’t have a company or a product yet, never mind. And even if you do, you can still do this exercise. I often practice copywriting on totally random products and companies, because I think it definitely helps me improve my craft and my ability to write headlines and sales letters for my products.

And if you follow these steps today, these Golden Nugget strategies will help you too.

To start you off, try these 3 simple, but still very effective headlines.

Task: What I want you to do is write as many headlines as you can think of for one of the companies or products you picked out from the mail you received this morning, for each of these 3 headline formulas.
